ISB celebrates English Day

The Indian School Bahrain (ISB) celebrated English Day on April 23 with a variety of cultural programmes and activities for students of grades IV to XII. The programme was initiated by the Department of English. The English Language Day started with the lighting of the lamp by ISB EC Member Binu Mannil Varughese and Ajayakrishnan V in the presence of Principal VR Palaniswamy, Staff Representative Johnson K Devassy, Vice Principal Senior Section Anand Nair, staff and students. HoD Caroline Saldanha welcomed the gathering. EC member Ajayakrishnan V spoke about the importance of English as a world language. Class IV students presented poem recitation and class V students a group song. English Teacher Leegy Kuruvachan gave a presentation on Geoffrey Chaucer, who has been styled the ‘Father of English literature.’ Nanditha Dileep of class X enacted a scene from William Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar. Vigneshwari Natarajan presented a declamation on APJ Abdul Kalam. Display Board competitions were held for various classes. Classes IX M& IX B, X F&XJ, XI L& XI J and XII L & XII M respectively won first prize and runners up trophy in display board competitions. Competitions were held in handwriting, spelling-bee and poster-making for Middle Section students. Winners in other competitions are: Safa Shahul Hameed(IV Q), Maria Tresa Sibi(IV A), Kezia Sharon(V T), Abhijay Rajesh(VI P), Anannya Kunnathuparambil Shareebkumar(VI F), Rudra Rupesh Aiyer(VI A), Dev Krishna Rajeendra Kumar Vadayil(VII A), Joanne Eliza James(VII Q), Andria Richard George(VIII R) and Anjaly Raj Dhanya(VIII R). Teachers Dilna C, Sumi Mary George and Rajani Menon coordinated the programme. Teacher Sreesadan O.P gave vote of thanks. It’s to be noted that English Language Day at the UN is celebrated on 23 April, the date traditionally observed as both the birthday and date of death of William Shakespeare.
