Indian Weightlifter Inspires ISB Students
Inspiring and motivating students for higher achievements in sports, Majiziya Bhanu, the 23-year-old Indian professional weightlifter interacted with the Indian School students. Majiziya recently won a gold medal in the 56 kg senior women’s open category at the World Powerlifting Championship held in Russia for the second year in a row. She came to limelight when she won the Miss Kerala title at the Mr Kerala competition in 2018 organised by the Sports Council of Kerala, making her the only hijab-clad woman to win the prize. ‘ In the initial days, men used to stare at me as I had my hijab on. But soon they realised that I was as serious as them in my workouts. Then all the eyes disappeared’, Majiziya said. ‘I wear a hijab and I am proud of it as it’s my identity. I felt special and unique when I was on stage wearing one. I want to let the world know that the hijab is never an obstacle for a woman who wants to achieve the impossible. It’s not just a piece of cloth, it offers strength and dignity’, she said. Majiziya Bhanu has won several medals in national and international level competitions in powerlifting and arm-wrestling ever since she entered the field in 2016. She was awarded the ‘best lifter’ prize at the World Powerlifting Championship held in Russia in which she won gold at the 56 kg senior women’s category and the deadlift category.
