Honouring Mahatma Gandhi ISB Celebrates Social Science Day
The Indian School Bahrain (ISB) celebrated Social Science Day on Thursday, October 1, 2020 commemorating the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Father of the Nation, with activities held online due to Covid 19 guidelines. It was the culmination of two yearlong commemoration activities recommended by the CBSE. As part of the commemoration students from classes IV to X organised activities in an appropriate manner from their homes due to the Covid 19 situation. ISB Hon. Chairman Prince S Natarajan said in a message that Gandhi’s ideals of truth, non-violence and love would pave the way for the welfare of the world by bringing harmony and equality in the society. Gandhi believed that education has to equip individuals with the skills and attitudes necessary for them to adapt to changing conditions, and for constructive participation in the task of social change. ISB Hon. Secretary Saji Antony Said the objective of Gandhian philosophy was to transform the individual and society simultaneously, in accordance with the principles of truth and non-violence. He also said that education should develop human values in the child. ISB Principal VR Palaniswamy said: According to Gandhi’s educational thoughts, the development of the personality of a child is more important than mere literacy or knowledge of different subjects. In other words he believed in life-centred as well as child-centred education. ISB Riffa Campus Principal Pamela Xavier said: Gandhi insisted that education should develop all aspects of individuality harmoniously. He also believed that one of the essential aims of education is the moral development or character development. Head Teachers Jose Thomas (IX-X) and Parvathy Devadas (VI-VIII) gave messages highlighting that it's a special occasion for everyone to rededicate to the values of truth, non-violence, harmony, morality and simplicity advocated by Mahatma. Gandhi is the symbol of peace and truth. Gandhian thoughts, principles, values and ideals should encourage our students to always be with the truth and have a non – violent path towards their progress, they said. Honouring the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi competitions were held in poster making ,essay writing on relevance of Gandhian thoughts. Students presented speeches, poems, patriotic songs and powerpoint presentations during the Social Science period.
