The Indian School to Install Mega Solar Plant on Campuses

The Indian School Bahrain (ISB) has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative in collaboration with Kanoo Cleanmax Renewables Assetco WLL to harness solar energy at its Isa Town and Riffa Campuses. Over the upcoming months, the school plans to install solar panels, marking a significant stride towards meeting its energy needs sustainably. The anticipated outcome is a solar power plant generating 1,866,600 units annually, equivalent to 63 to 64% of the school campuses' current energy consumption, contributing substantially to green energy initiatives. Over a 25-year span, the plant is projected to yield a total energy output of 43,334,821 units.

This visionary move aligns with the renewable energy policy of the Kingdom of Bahrain, showcasing the school's commitment to environmental sustainability. Under the solar power purchase agreement (PPA), Kanoo Cleanmax Renewables Assetco W.L.L. takes charge of designing, financing, installing, operating, and maintaining the solar energy systems at the two campuses, incurring minimal to no cost for the school.

Entrusting the solar power plant project to Kanoo Cleanmax Renewables Assetco WLL, the ISB  has entered into a 25-year lease agreement for a capacity of 1099 kWp. Technology Engineering WLL has been appointed as the project consultant. The official handover of the project agreement took place, with Honorary Chairman Prince S Natarajan and Hon. EC Member Finance-Legal Affairs Binu Mannil Varughese representing the school, and Sales Manager Mohammed Parvez Mustafa and Sarin Rajeevan Puthalath representing Kanoo Cleanmax Renewables Assetco WLL. Hon.Vice-Chairman Jyafar Maidani, EC Member -Health and Environment Ajayayakrishnan V, and Principal VR Palaniswamy attended.

Prince Natarajan emphasized the substantial cost savings the school could achieve on its EWA bill through this initiative, underscoring the UNESCO-affiliated institution's commitment to sustainable development goals. The project had gained approval during the school's annual general body meeting (AGM) on March 10, 2023.

Beyond serving as an energy solution, the solar power installations at the school hold educational value. Integrating solar power systems into the school's infrastructure presents an invaluable teaching tool, exposing students to renewable energy concepts and environmental science. The presence of solar panels becomes an educational resource, fostering a deeper understanding of sustainability and the pivotal role of renewable energy in addressing climate change.
