Student Leaders Discuss Global Issues at BMUNIS’25 Conference
The Bahrain Model United Nations Conference (BMUNIS’25), organized by The Indian School Bahrain (ISB), commenced on Friday, September 12, 2025, at the school auditorium on its Isa Town campus. The two-day event is designed to foster leadership qualities, diplomatic understanding, and public speaking skills among students. The conference was officially inaugurated by ISB Hon. Chairman Adv. Binu Mannil Varughese, in the presence of Hon. Secretary V. Rajapandian, Principal VR Palaniswamy, Junior Campus Principal Pamela Xavier, Senior School& Academic Administration Vice-Principal G. Satheesh, Junior Wing Vice-Principal Priya Laji, MUN Director Chhaya Joshi, Head Teacher-Activities Sreekala Rajesh, and student leaders.
Approximately 370 students from grades 6 to 12 participated in the conference, representing leading schools in Bahrain: The Indian School, The Asian School, The New Indian School, Bahrain Indian School, Al Noor International School, New Millennium School, Sacred Heart School, Ibn Khuldoon National School, St. Christopher’s School, and The British School of Bahrain. BMUNIS’25 was entirely student-run, with the organization, planning, and execution led by a dedicated team of students. The delegates, representing various nations, engaged in in-depth debates on pressing global issues across multiple councils. Each council session was presided over by student chairs who guided the discussions in accordance with authentic United Nations procedures.
The inaugural ceremony began with the national anthems of Bahrain and India. Secretary-General Rebecca Ann Binu delivered the welcome address, highlighting the importance of stepping out of one’s comfort zone and embracing opportunities for growth. “These halls and councils are more than just arenas for debate. They are spaces where ideas are tested, where perspectives are exchanged, and where the qualities of leadership, empathy, and courage are cultivated,” she said.
In his felicitation address, ISB Hon. Chairman Adv. Binu Mannil Varughese emphasized the impact of Model United Nations conferences in shaping globally aware citizens. He noted that The Indian School was the first CBSE institution in the Kingdom to host its own MUN and is among the few in Bahrain to conduct a completely student-led MUN. “This year’s conference is especially significant as we celebrate both the 75th anniversary of our school and the 10th anniversary of ISBMUN. These milestones reflect our unwavering commitment to excellence in education and global engagement,” he said.
Student Director of Research and Training, Adwait Nair, encouraged delegates to develop not only their debating skills but also their understanding of diplomacy, which is essential for future leadership. Student Director-OC, Niharika Sarkar, urged participants to cherish not only the debates but also the friendships, values, and diverse perspectives gained through the experience.
Masters of Ceremonies Deputy Secretary General Joel Shaiju and Head of Hospitality and PR Mishka Pritam hosted the event, following which students moved to their respective council chambers to commence debates on assigned global topics. The discussions were intense, well-researched, and diplomatically conducted under the supervision of council chairs.
The conference was organized by students with the guidance from MUN Directors Chhaya Joshi, Sreesadan O.P., Danny Thomas,Coordinators Asha Latha, Meera Annie Varghese, Geetha Suresh Kumar and Prinitha Suresh.
