Nearly 150 Players Register for ISB@75 Chess Championship – 2nd Edition
The Indian School, Bahrain (ISB), in association with Arjun’s Chess Academy, is all set to host the ISB@75 Chess Championship – 2nd Edition on Friday, 12 June 2026 as part of the school’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The championship has already generated tremendous interest across the Kingdom, with approximately 150 players registering in the Open Category as of now. The Champion will receive USD 100, while the runner-up will be awarded USD 50 and the third-place winner will receive USD 25.
In the Inter-School Team Event, eight CBSE schools have confirmed their participation, reflecting the growing popularity of chess among students and the wider community. Special recognition and prizes will be awarded to outstanding performers across various categories, making the tournament an exciting platform for players of different age groups and skill levels.
In response to the overwhelming interest, the organisers have announced an extension of the registration deadline until Wednesday, 10 June 2026, providing additional opportunity for chess enthusiasts to join the event. The championship initiative is being spearheaded by ISB Hon. Vice Chairman and Hon. Member – Sports, Dr Mohammed Faizal,Convener Faisal Madappally and Coordinator Shamshad, whose efforts have played a key role in expanding the scope and reach of the event. Organisers believe that the second edition will further strengthen Bahrain’s chess culture while providing students and community members with a valuable opportunity to engage in healthy and meaningful competition.
Building on the remarkable success of last year’s championship, which recorded one of the highest participations in a chess event in Bahrain, this year’s edition is expected to be bigger, more competitive and more inclusive. The tournament aims to promote strategic thinking, concentration, discipline, analytical skills, decision-making and sportsmanship through one of the world’s most intellectually stimulating games. The championship will feature two categories: the Inter-School Team Event and the Open Rapid Chess Tournament. The Inter-School category is designed for students, while the Open Category welcomes chess enthusiasts from across Bahrain. Participation in the Inter-School event is free of charge, whereas an entry fee of BD 3 applies for the Open Category. Schools have been invited to register one team in the Under-14 category. Each team must consist of four players, including at least one boy and one girl, ensuring balanced representation and encouraging broader participation.
All matches will be conducted in accordance with FIDE Rapid Chess Rules, ensuring a fair and professionally managed competition. ISB Hon. Chairman Adv. Binu Mannil Varughese, Hon. Secretary V. Rajapandian, Hon. Vice Chairman and Hon. Member – Sports Dr Mohammed Faizal, Executive Committee Members and Principal VR Palaniswamy have appealed to students, parents, schools and chess enthusiasts to participate wholeheartedly and contribute to the success of this landmark championship.
